Tips for the jumps racing at Chepstow on Saturday 9 October

1:50 Chepstow

2m Geoffrey Broomhall Memorial Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) (5yo+ 0-150)

I’m taking on the favourite with Galice Macalo in this race.

She goes well after a break and won first time out this time last year after being off for 251 days.

She easily won a class 4 over course and distance in her last race.  She won by 15 lengths and cantered home and will be on the same official rating on Friday. Galice Macalo won a Class 3 race in a pleasing fashion last October winning by 11 lengths. In the race after she came 2nd in a listed on heavy and went on to race at grade level.  A class 2 race like this should be within her capabilities.

The trainer Jane Williams has a decent record over hurdles and is looking for her first win of the season.  Chester Williams is in the saddle and claims 3lb.

It’s possible she will have progressed over her time off and could be on for a big run.

2:25 Chepstow 2m7½f Native River Handicap Chase (Class 2) (4yo+)

Kitty’s Light looks great value here at 4/1 with William Hill.

He is dropping in class from grade 3 to class 2 company for his reappearance. Stamina is assured as he has raced up to 3m5f without showing any signs of getting tired and I don’t think a 4lb rise from his last race will slow him down much. He will get the going.

Kitty’s Light would surely have won his last race if he had not been hampered at the finish.  He was held up for the race behind the pack and came through towards the later stages. From the last fence it looked like the win was his until a tired one drifted in front of him and closed down his run.

Hopefully he will be ready to go after his break.

3.30 Chepstow 2m3½f Wasdell Group Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) (Class 1) (4yo+)

A good clue to the chances of this one on his debut to handicapping is the early support in the market with him coming from 15/2 to 5/1 with William Hill.

Dargiannini has enjoyed a great career so far with 3 wins from 4 runs. He won on his debut in a national hunt flat race.  After coming second on his first try at a class 3 novice hurdle he won two on the trot in class 4 in good style. He is versatile having won on both good and soft.

Paul Nicholls is in brilliant form with 3 wins from 10 runners in the last 14 days (at the time of writing).  The horse is new to the yard having arrived at the start of the month and has had his seasonal break.  Dargiannini looks like he has bags of potential and should do well.

Gavin Sheehan rode him for two of his previous wins so knows how to get the best out of the gelding.
